What Is FSC Certification, and Why Does It Matter for Your Packaging?
A short, practical guide to FSC for buyers — what the labels mean, when to specify it, and how it affects price and lead time.
If you've shopped for paper packaging recently, you've probably seen the **FSC** logo — that small tree-shaped mark on a coffee cup, gift bag, or shipping box. Here's what it actually means, and when it makes sense to specify it for your project.
## What FSC actually certifies
FSC stands for **Forest Stewardship Council**, an independent non-profit that audits forests and supply chains. The certification means three things, in plain language:
1. **The trees were grown responsibly** — workers' rights respected, biodiversity protected, no clear-cutting of irreplaceable forests.
2. **The supply chain is traceable** — every link from forest to finished product is audited (this is called *Chain of Custody*).
3. **The label on the product is verified** — only certified mills can sell paper as FSC-certified.
There are three FSC labels you'll see in the wild:
- **FSC 100%** — entirely from FSC-certified forests.
- **FSC Mix** — a blend of certified, recycled, and controlled wood (most paper bags fall here).
- **FSC Recycled** — fully from recycled fiber, audited end-to-end.
## When to specify FSC for packaging
Buyers usually ask for FSC for one of three reasons:
- **Brand commitment** — your sustainability page promises certified materials and an audit trail.
- **Retailer requirement** — large retailers (especially in the EU and UK) increasingly require FSC for own-label products.
- **Tender / RFP language** — government and corporate tenders often list FSC as a minimum threshold.
If none of those apply, FSC is still a good signal of quality — but it adds 5–10% to material cost and can extend lead time by a few days. For internal-use or short-run projects, plain kraft is often fine.
## What it costs and how long it takes at Starmi
At Starmi we maintain FSC Mix and FSC Recycled stock for kraft and white paper bags. Specifying FSC for a typical bag order adds:
- **Cost:** roughly +5–10% on material.
- **Lead time:** no extra time for in-stock paper; +3–5 days if a non-stock weight is required.
- **Documentation:** we provide the full Chain of Custody trail with shipment.
